Village house overview - owner's description
Maison du Perigord embodies the style and grace of its original 1805 heritage and the Maison d’Amis completes this striking self catering accommodation.
You have arrived at Maison du Perigord, which is owned by Paul and Christelle Dallimore who live in Christchurch, New Zealand.
They purchased the house in May 2006 for the purpose of providing a European base for their use and also to operate the adjoining Maison d’Amis/Gite as a self-catering accommodation facility.
The buildings were built in 1805 and to put that date into perspective it was at the same time that Napoleon 1 was head of state for France. It would have been the Maison du Maitre – the masters farm house – for a large part of the land in the immediate area. More lately it has been the home of the local doctor, Dr Champagne and his family.
The Maison has many interesting features including secret stairways, exposed stonewalls, unusual plumbing and quirky floors and doors. Most of all it has the charm of bygone eras and a sense of romanticism. In the spring and summer months wisteria and virginia creeper cover the exterior adding to the charm of the property.
Adjacent to the main house is the Maison d'amis , a charming 2 bedroom cottage, which was originally the stables for the property and now converted into a well appointed cottage in the french style. Containing a large kitchen dining area, stylish saloon, bathroom on the ground floor with two very large bedrooms on the upper level - all very well appointed.
Take advantage of Port Sainte Foy’s central location and explore the area. There are amazing villages within 1 hour driving distance and around every corner is a visual delight.
There are many Chateau within easy reach – some within walking distance - where you can sample the local wines, fishing in the Dordogne only 100 metres away, kayaking, superb golfing at Chateau de Vigiers, St Emillion, Sarlat, the foie gras is a must… the list is endless. You will have your taste buds tantalise at every moment and the local people will welcome you with an open generosity. If you do not speak French, give it a go, the locals will appreciate an honest attempt and you will enjoy the challenge.
Port Sainte Foy is a small village but contains all you need and has within easy walking distance a ATM machine, local pub, very good restaurant, dairy and bakery. Across the river, a 5-minute walk is the bastide village of Sainte Foy la Grande. Here you will find many excellent restaurants, the largest Saturday market in the Dordogne and many excellent shops.
Our house manager Marlene Ayres is only a telephone call away so if you have any problems please do not hesitate to call her.
Enjoy your stay
