The River Touyre encircles this pastoral 18th century chateau in Midi-Pyrenees, where the old and new commingle. The owners, Nico and Rachel, have lovingly restored the two wings to both honour the ancient stone walls and spoil guests with modern comforts. The children can stay all together in the 15 person dorm room (with a ping pong table for good measure), while adults will adore the quiet peace of the grounds and their private rooms, simply decorated with antiques.
Outside you'll find a romantic chapel, the frescoes of the past crumbling slowly away. Weddings look divine on the 22 acres of private grounds, with stone stairs and terraced gardens winding down toward the river. For a smaller affair, have meals on the terrace by the infinity pool, or ask the on-site concierge where to go for the region's rich and warming foods, like foie gras or aligot.
Located only 30 km from the Carcassonne airport, your guests will arrive with no trouble. A 10 minute drive will take you from your family chateau to Mirepoix, where the town square, Place des Couverts, is not to be missed. Drive an hour to Toulouse for great architecture and art of the region.
The house comprises two adjacent, connected buildings: the core of the old house and a newer wing. Both have been completely renovated and restored.
On the ground floor there is a very large kitchen/dining room (11 x 8m) with an enormous open fireplace and a pantry, a small library and an elegant salon. There are stone or terracotta-tiled floors throughout and ceilings both on this floor and upstairs are about 4 m high. Stone stairs lead up to two magnificent bedroom suites with their own bathrooms and one other small twin bedroom.
Up again and there's an enormous (11 x 30 sq. metres) room set out as a childrens' dormitory which sleeps about 15 (with a Ping-Pong table) with two showers and a loo in the tower. Down the hall there are 3 double rooms, 2 twin rooms and 2 bathrooms; a large double height music room with a grand piano, a study and a spacious gallery on the 2nd floor, with a full size snooker table. This room is also used for yoga classes. The house is fully furnished with beautiful antiques, in a clean, simple and uncluttered manner.
Outside a very dramatic infinity pool sits on the cliff's edge. There is a pool house with a shaded terrace and seating for sixteen or so, a kitchen, a shower and a barbecue. The garden falls over 4 terraces of flowers, steps and paths into beautiful surrounding meadows, with the river running through and the high chateau walls are covered by scented climbing roses.
Quille is perfect to take for a week or two for your holiday with friends or family. Parties of 16 adults or 25 with children can be easily accommodated. But the place is equally comfortable, spacious and peaceful with just one or two couples.
Sheltered by wooded foothills but looking out to the Pyrenees a few miles to the south, the Chateau lies on a rock cliff which falls sheer to the River Touyre below. The river runs almost 360° around the rock, creating a "presqu'ile" of the property and its garden. Although secluded, local towns Mirepoix and Lavelanet are both within 15 minutes.
The surrounding area is famous for its beauty, its architecture and its Cathar history. All the Cathar castles (Montsegur, Roquefixade, Peyrepetuse, Puilaurens, Quillan...) are within an hour or so. Plenty of walking, riding, skiing is available nearby, there is lake sailing 10 minutes away and the coast is an hour's drive.
Shopping is in Mirepoix, about 10-15 minutes away. Toulouse is an hour away and has regular daily flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Paris, Nice and most major European cities. Ryanair flies daily from Stansted to Carcassonne, which is 40 minutes from the house. The property is also accessible from Montpellier (2 hours), Perpignan (75 minutes), Girona and Barcelona (2-3 hours).
