Villa overview - owner's description

A contemporary home in a classic setting, Villa Rachel is situated in one of the most beautiful regions of northern Corsica, along the Balagne coast near L'Ile-Rousse and Calvi.
Modern and unique in style both inside and out, floor to ceiling glass windows look over the rooftops and Mediterranean trees towards the sea. The ground floor offers vast living and dining space with huge doors opening up to a marvellous al-fresco terrace, allowing an uninterrupted flow from inside-out. A beautiful kitchen and an en-suite master bedroom with its own garden patio complete this level whilst the upper mezzanine floor has two further bedrooms and a shower room.
Steps outside lead down to the grand pool terrace where you will find wide sliding doors each leading to the final two bedrooms allowing you to step straight out for a dip in the inviting heated swimming pool. The beautiful decking surrounded by plants and trees is the most relaxing spot for lounging in the sun on long summer afternoons before heading upstairs for an evening aperitif gazing out towards the sea.
Villa Rachel is set in an elevated position in a private residential area where you can wander down to the beach in about 20 minutes, passing over rocks to reach the crystal-clear sea. Within a few minutes by car you can also reach more picture-perfect beaches such as Bodri with its glorious white sands or be enjoying watersports in nearby Algajola.
Head to charming L'Ile-Rousse to dine in some wonderful local restaurants specialising in chestnuts, wild boar or serving the catch-of-the-day or take the little narrow-gauge train, U Trinichellu, to Calvi for a leisurely lunch with good wine in the old town. Inland you can discover tiny, historic villages in the Balagne hills, perfect for hikers and cyclists or take a boat trip from Calvi to the amazing Scandola Nature Reserve, an area of outstanding natural beauty.
There's good reason that Corsica is known as the Isle of Beauty with its stunning landscapes, idyllic villages and beautiful beaches and Villa Rachel offers the perfect place from which to explore the northern part of this amazing island.

Villa Rachel is set in a residential estate of beautiful villas which lead down to the sea. You can walk to the beach in about 15-20 minutes with the last part only accessed via foot and down a rocky path. Just along from this resort is the absolutely stunning Bodri beach (3km) with crystal clear waters and white sand; just a five-minute drive or a quick hop on the narrow-gauge train.

You are perfectly located near the little train station (900m) where the delightful U Trinichellu takes you in either direction to L'Ile-Rousse or Calvi, stopping off at lovely beaches on the way (such as Bodri, one stop away). It only goes once every hour or two during the day only and can get busy in the summer months, but this is a lovely way to go out for a leisurely lunch with some good wine or visit an amazing beach without the hassle of parking. There is also a train from Calvi, Algajola or L'Ile-Rousse to Corte and onwards to Ajaccio, following spectacular mountain scenery en route.

There are restaurants within a short drive, some of them along the coast and others in nearby Algajola (4km) and L'Ile-Rousse (5km).
Algajola has a lovely long sandy beach with a good choice of watersports including wind-surfing and snorkelling. L'Ile-Rousse is a particularly beautiful old town with little streets filled with shops and restaurants specialising in wonderful Corsican food such as chestnuts, wild boar or the catch of the day on one of the beach restaurants in an idyllic setting. Walk up to the lighthouse at Ile de la Pietra for spectacular views, especially around sun-set when the rock glows red.

Calvi (20km) has an amazing citadel with wonderful vistas, narrow streets filled with charming restaurants and shops and a marina with cafes and bars. The town beach has lovely shallow waters and watersports including jet-ski, paragliding and windsurfing. The setting of Calvi is particularly spectacular with the rugged mountains in the background.

Boat trips can be taken from the marina to the nearby Scandola Nature Reseve (a World Heritage Site), an incredibly unspoilt area of beautiful rock formations with restricted access only by boat (or foot via high mountains).

Inland you can explore the stunning interiors of the Balagne countryside with idyllic hilltop villages such as Monticello (9km), Santa-Reparata-di-Balagna (9km) and Sant'Antonino (13km), the latter being one of France's Plus Beaux Villages with spectacular views towards the coast. Three other villages not to be missed include Corbara, Pigna (known for its ceramics) and Aregno. There are some wonderful hikes around this area and cycling is also a popular pursuit in these parts (bikes can be hired locally).

Just inland on the coastal road between L'Ile-Rousse and Calvi is picturesque Lumio (11km) with its baroque church, olive trees and lively Wednesday morning market. Keen walkers can hike up to the abandoned village of Occi for more panoramic views.

Another area of outstanding beauty is the beach at Ostriconi (20km), north-east of L'Ile-Rousse, a wild beach only accessed by foot. Continue along the winding roads of the Desert des Agriates to the beautiful harbourside town of St Florent (49km) at the foot of the equally stunning Cap Corse, a wild peninsula with idyllic fishing villages and mesmerising scenery. There are also some good wines to taste in this part of the island, especially around Patrimonio (59km).
