Village house overview - owner's description

Situated in the heart of the sleepy hamlet of Brezilhac, amongst the last of the vineyards of the region. Nestled just 20 mins from Carcassonne, and its walled Unesco world heritage site, and 20 mins to the beautiful towns of Mirepoix or Limoux.
Carcassonne has great shopping, with markets on a Wednesday and Saturday, with La Cite boasting some fabulous restaurants. Toulouse is just 40 mins away, and Montpellier 1.5 hours.
Local markets available almost daily with all the atmosphere and amazing fresh produce. Boulangerie, farm shop, pharmacy and supermarket are all within a 5-10 min drive of the village.
Local restaurants and bars are available in the two closest main villages of Belveze and Montreal, both 5km away. With some fabulous local wine domains offering a more indulgent experience. Or just soak up the calm and tranquility of rural France lounging by the pool, or in one of the hammock chairs.

The Area
Languedoc boasts one of the most diverse landscapes in the whole of France. Carcassonne is nestled between the Pyrenees to the South and the Black Mountains to the North and to the East is the Mediterranean coastline, only 45 minutes drive from the house. An ideal location for hot summers, and skiing in winter.

Wednesday – Bram (10 min drive, mainly fruit & veg local village market)
Wednesday – Carcassonne Square (30 min drive, fruit & veg, smaller than Sat)
Friday – Limoux (20 min drive, mainly fruit & veg local village market)

Shopping / Supermarkets
Local bakery – sporadically in the village hall at Lasserre-De-Proouille
Better bakery at Montreal in the village, though the Intermarche does good bread
Bread Van – most mornings in the village
Meat Van – Thursday lunchtimes, sounds his horn as he comes round
Fish Van – Friday lunchtimes, sounds his horn as he comes round
Montreal – Local Intermarche, open all day, good fresh bread. Good local store.
Bram – Good size Carrefour supermarket
Castelnaudary – Big Intermarche supermarket & shopping centre with outlet stores
Limoux – Big L’Eclerc, Lidls etc on the industrial estate to the left of town
Carcassonne – Geant in the industrial estate opposite the airport.

Places to see:

Carcassonne – La Cite
Steeped in history, this UNESCO world heritage site is well worth a few hours of your trip. Exploring this beautiful and interesting castle will take you back in time, learn about 16th century life within the castle walls.
Plenty of cafes and shops to enjoy whilst soaking up the atmosphere – visiting midweek is advised as weekends attract many coach trips.

Carcassonne – City & Shopping – an interesting and easy meander through the narrow streets surrounding the main square. Lots of French high street branded stores as well as individual boutiques. The square is a great place to people watch with a glass of local wine.

Limoux – a pretty and typically French square, approx 20 mins from the house.
A large hypermarket L’Eclerc is on the outskirts of the town – great for a big shop. Also home to the regions famous Blanquette – a great sparkly white wine.

Mirepoix – a medieval town at the base of the Pyrenees best visited on a Monday when the market is on – plenty of French artisans to enjoy as well as great fruit, veg and cheese. The architecture here is very interesting and dates back centuries, take your camera. Plenty of cafes and lunch spots.

Castelnaudary – approx 15 mins drive, famous for the local regional dish ‘cassoulet’, a tasty dish of saucicsson, duck and white beans. Alongside the Canal du Midi. You’ll pass a new shopping complex on the way which has a great well stocked Intermarche.

Toulouse – 50mins drive from the house, a great city for shoppers. Lovely river to walk along and enjoy a glass of wine beside. Hosts all major stores and eateries. The square opposite the “Mairee’ building is particularly impressive and is surrounded by good restaurants. Best to park in one of the central underground car parks.

Limousis. The largest developed cave in Aude département, open from April to end of October. 8 halls. Stalagmites. The main cave contains beautiful rock and crystal formations. Crystals of calcite and aragonite are of exceptional geological interest.

Boat rides:
Boat rides on the beautiful Canal du Midi at the Port du Carcassonne, just opposite the train station. This is okay if you’re new to Carcassonne and you would like a small tour of the canal, but on a hot day avoid at all costs!
We would highly recommend the boat ride at Homps (an hours drive towards Bezier).

This is a man-made lake with two beaches ideal for swimming, one sandy, and one with pebbles and picnic benches with plenty of shade. There is also acro-branching for children where you can climb in between the trees and peddalos on the lake to hire in the holiday season. The beaches have life guards between 11.00 am and 7.00 p.m.

Lake at Saissac
Approx 40 mins drive, pretty setting and café to enjoy a relaxing lunch.
Narbonne Plage & Gruissan
Allow about 1 hour to the beach in the summer.

Today, it is a modern thermal spa with the latest on "thermalisme" equipment. Waters here are still used today as a cure for rheumatism and certain skin problems

Local Restaurants:

Gramazie – there is a fabulous new brasserie / bar in lovely grounds of a beautiful local chateaux. Very reasonable, a must see and easy with kids. A must do for an early evening apero! Only 4km away down the back lanes through Ferran easy by bike – though its up hill on the way home !

Monreal – local pizza restaurant and bar, does takeaway. Less than 10mins drive. The bakery in this village is very good too! The Intermarche local store is well stocked and also just outside Montreal (you will drive past it)

Belveze – the closest to the house, can be cycled (there at least… !) Has an outside bar in the middle of the vlllage offering specials board and great pizza menu (also for take away), there is also a great little kids area right next to it, and there are usually plenty running around in the evenings. Every evening except Mondays in season.

Domain Gayda – only 10 mins down the road towards Limoux. Fabulous wine domaine with some great wines. Good menu in a fabulous setting, quite high end, you could spend good money and still leave hungry (it’s one of those places!). Visit the website for more details:

Auberge du Chateau (30 mins by car, but well worth the trip) 11570 Cavanac. Phone 0468 796104.
This is by the hospital and golf course in Carcassonne, towards La Cite. Take the road to St.Hilaire and Cavanac. When you reach Cavanac take the first turning on the left and follow the road through the village until you will see the iron gates of the chateau.
There is a set menu for 44.00€; this includes, as much red/white/rose wine you can drink, 5 courses, an aperitif, coffee/tea and night cap. If you fancy a very special treat then this is a lovely place to go. In summer we would recommend you dine on the terrace. They are closed Mondays.

This is placed in the lower part of the main city, please see card from reception. The price for a meal for two is about 45€-50€. All food is sourced from local producers. This is the only restaurant who offers a good vegetarian menu. There is also a shop where you can buy retro-style ornaments etc. Great place to spend an evening. Open from Tuesday to Saturday, lunchtime and evenings.

La Compte Roger 14, rue St.Louis- La Cite. Phone 0468 119340
This is in the medieval castle, La Cite. There are many restaurants in the castle but this if our own favorite. Prices start at 35.00€ for a three course meal. It has been beautifully decorated and the food is delicious. A bottle of wine costs about 16€ a bottle.

We are always open to ideas and suggestions, and would welcome any constructive feedback. Also if you have visited any places or restaurants in the area and would like to add them to this guide then please let us know.
