Le Grand Lézard, Near Aulnay

Overview

In 2004 we left the busy city life in the UK to retire in France. We chose the Charente Maritime area because of its warm climate, beautiful countryside and its wonderful coastline.

We live in a restored charantaise farmhouse which has been converted into three cottages, one of which is our home.

We are situated in a very quiet Hamlet surrounded by fields of sunflowers, wheat and maize and within a short distance of Aulnay with all local facilities including a supermarket, restaurant, bar, open-air swimming pool, tennis court, its famous Romanesque Church and Sunday morning market where fresh local produce can be purchased.

The lovely market town of St. Jean DAngely is within 15 minutes drive with many shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants offering French, Italian, Cantonese and Indian cuisine. There is also an indoor Leisure Pool, skate park, mini golf, river activities and go-karting.
Wednesday and Saturday mornings are market days.

The gite has a covered front porch with electric wall light, table and chairs, overlooking the front garden with a small lawn and shrubs and two magnificent Horse-chestnut trees which provide excellent shade for outside dining.

There are several outdoor sitting areas in sun or shade with garden furniture and BBQ.
Rear garden with lawn. Private and secure car parking.

Out & About
Le Lézard is an ideal base for many tourist attractions:

Marais Poitevin - Considered to be the most beautiful marsh in France where you can hire a
boat and discover the green watery maze.

Poitiers - The provincial capital of Poitou which still retains its historic atmosphere. North of the city is Futuroscope which offers the finest array of large cinema screens in Europe – certainly a full day out for all the family.

Limoges : Renowned for its fine porcelain and enamel.

Oradour-sur-Glane: Perhaps the most painful symbol to the French of the German atrocities of the second world war.

Cognac: Several world famous distilleries where you can tour and sample!

Saintes: A miniature piece of Italy set down on the banks of the Charente River with four bell towers, Abbey and Gallo-Roman amphitheatre.

Royan: A lively seaside resort with sandy beaches and a wide range of amenities and activities. Many shops and restaurants and street entertainment. Seafood restaurants by the harbour. Boat and fishing trips.

La Palmyre: 5 miles of sandy beaches on the edge of a forest. The magnificent La Palmyre Zoo is the largest of its kind in France where visitors can see some 800 animals in a pine forest setting.

Ile dOléron: The largest of all the French islands after Corsica. Long sandy beaches, oyster farms and vineyards. Small villages with shops and restaurants offering excellent seafood.

Rochefort: An ancient naval base. Catch up with the building progress of the 18th century frigate “Hermione”. The Royal Ropewalk, the Naval Museum and the exotic home of writer Pierre Loti – all well worth a visit.

La Rochelle: A beautiful old sea port offering boat trips to the islands and Fort Bouyard. Many pavement cafés and restaurants specialising in seafood. Open air gift stalls and street entertainment along the quay. Several museums and the wonderful Aquarium – one of the most visited places in the Département.

Ile de Ré: Highly prized destination for French sun worshippers, who bask in its special micro-climate. Vines, salt marshes and oyster beds. Beaches, harbours and small villages. Poitou-Charentes answer to St. Tropez is St. Martin-en-Ré boasting its circular harbour with seafood restaurants and narrow boutique lined streets.

Here at Les Lézard you can enjoy touring, cycling, walking, sampling the local seafood and wine - not forgetting the local apéritif Pineau de Charente - or simply relaxing by the pool!

The Gite was clean and well maintained and the pool was excellent. Ian and Barbara the owners were brilliant we arrived late and they bought us some food shopping in. The Gite is well located for seeing the surrounding area. We have no complaints and plan to return at a later date.

Stayed June 10. The property is a great property but I think the maintenance could do with a bit more care and attention. There was also a slight issue with the description, as the pool is not private for this Gite, but shared with the owners and the other gite they rent out.
