Villa overview - owner's description
Soak up the luxurious elegance of this 18th century stone farmhouse, perched on a quiet hillside overlooking the Rhone valley.
Soak up the luxurious elegance of this 18th century stone farmhouse, perched on a quiet hillside overlooking the Rhone valley. The beautiful views and atmosphere of this house are hard to convey - they have to be experienced...
Easily accommodating several families or a group of friends in its 7 bedrooms, the house features a heated saltwater pool, boules area and shaded courtyard. Multiple terrace areas offer space for dining 'en plein air' or relaxing quietly, taking in the spectacular views. Fabulous kitchens inspire collaborative cooking - of course with fresh ingredients procured from local markets - and the balcony provides the perfect spot for sipping an aperitif, watching the evening sunlight glow across the valley.
The location is peaceful and self-contained, and the hills providing a backdrop to the house can be hiked endlessly. Yet a short drive will get you to restaurants, shops, markets, ancient cities and villages - and of course vineyards!
The owners provide a wealth of detailed information for guests who manage to tear themselves away from the seductive peace of the house and its surroundings. At the end of every day out, La Vieille Magnanerie provides the perfect homecoming - allowing everyone their own space, be it in the illuminated pool, gazing from a terrace, or lounging in front of a roaring fire.
For smaller parties (up to 9 people) wishing to enjoy the space and peace of La Vieille Magnanerie, the owners offer the option of renting only the Farmhouse itself for a reduced tariff. Ideal for 2 couples with or without children, guests would still enjoy exclusivity of the property and its luxurious facilities please enquire for details.
Accommodation in the main farmhouse is comprised of 2 large en-suite master bedrooms (one of which has a claw-foot tub and its own breakfast terrace) and a 'bunk room' that sleeps 5 and has en-suite WC.
Next to the bunk room, a cosy 'cave' with vaulted ceilings houses the DVD player, lounging sofas and children's games and toys. A large utility room is also on the ground floor.
Upstairs the spacious lounge, with its stone Provencal fireplace, leads onto a balcony and connects through the magnificent hallway to the kitchen and pool terrace. The kitchen itself is beautifully designed with state of the art appliances to accommodate a large party cooking and dining together.
The remaining accommodation is accessed across the interior courtyard and includes 2 bedrooms (one large double, one twin) and a large family bathroom with shower and tub. An adjoining apartment has separate entrances in the courtyard and onto the terrace below. It comprises 2 bedrooms - one small double, one large mezzanine - and open kitchen, dining and lounge space downstairs. The bathroom features a wet-room style shower.
As well as a galley kitchen and DVD player, the apartment has its own laundry facilities. Guests staying in the apartment have their own dining terrace (and views!) too.
The pool, tastefully fenced off for safety, can be accessed from the apartment or the main house - and has its own WC and changing room. Below the pool terrace is a large boules or 'petanque' area - great for other games such as badminton or volley ball. The grounds are planted with lavender and herbs, olive and fruit trees. A beautiful giant mulberry tree graces the driveway - a legacy of the original silk farm. Guests are welcome to pick herbs, ripe fruit and almonds during their stay.
La Vieille Magnanerie is located on the edge of the Ardeche, 7 km from the town of Montelimar, which is famous for its production of the confectionary nougat. This ideal - and lesser known - location provides easy access to the Ardeche, Drome and Provence regions, which means opportunities for exploring are endless, whatever your taste.
The Ardeche is home to spectacular gorges, medieval hilltop villages and chateaux. There are Roman remains, vineyards, caves, rivers and lakes to explore. In a different direction, a short drive will get you to the famous Cote du Rhone Villages wine producers or the ancient cities of Orange, Avignon and Arles. Every day of the week local markets showcase the produce of the region - olives, peaches, chestnuts, truffles, honey, cheese, sweet nougat and bunches & bunches or lavender...
Guests who enjoy being active have a myriad of choices - from hiking to canoeing, wild-swimming to horseback riding. Others prefer to soak up the cultural experiences of world-class theatre and music festivals or perhaps Roman spectacles re-enacted in their historic setting.
The nearest village of Rochemaure, 2km away, boasts a remarkable chateau perched dramatically on a cliff top. Its tiny cobbled streets and alleys are worth exploring and the village provides all the essential amenities - grocery, butcher, bakeries, post office, restaurants, bar - and wine specialist!
Getting to and from La Vieille Magnanerie requires a car. However, as it is within several miles of the A7 'Autoroute du Soleil', destinations and airports north and south of Montelimar are very accessible. The TGV train stops at Montelimar (7 km away - car rentals close by) or Valence 60km away. While Avignon and Nimes are the nearest airports, Lyon and Marseilles are under 2 hours drive away.
A local, English-speaking person welcomes guests to the house and is available by phone for the duration of the stay.
Guests staying longer than one week can expect a weekly linen-change and housekeeping.
