Gite overview - owner's description
Recently renovated and full of character, the orangery is now up and running open for business this year. We have pulled out all the stops on this one bedroom beautiful hide away, just for couples.
An orangery was a room or a dedicated building in the grounds of fashionable residences from the 17th to the 19th centuries where orange and other fruit trees were protected during the winter.
Up five stone steps from the front terrace, you are at the orangery's own private entrance. The impressive oak door and windows which run the entire length of the orangery have recently been restored by a local artisan craftsman; holding the history and character, they flood the orangery with sun and warmth.
With direct access to the front terrace, the brand new oak kitchen has all modern appliances, including touchscreen induction hob, built in oven and integrated dishwasher. The table for two has fabulous views of the grounds and riverbank or if you want, you can nip out to the terrace where you will find more tables and chairs.
The open plan living area has plenty of room for relaxing, the large windows making it a perfect place to sit and read or there is a 32" tv, should you wish to catch up with your favourite programmes.
The spacious bedroom is equipped with an impressive king size bed, antique armoire and plenty of storage. The fabulous windows giving views of the grounds at the front of the chateau.
The shower room, like the kitchen is new and modern, having a walk in shower, vanity unit with storage underneath, w.c. and heated towel rail.
Outside, table and chairs, sun loungers and a gas barbecue are included for your use and you are very welcome to enjoy any part of the nine acres that Château de Lucy sits in.
The river L'Oise which runs around the edge of the property is ideal for trout fishing, or if you are a carp fishing fan, there are well stocked carp lakes about 2kms away. If fishing doesn’t appeal to you, you can always go for a wander along the river bank towards the Mill at Lucy or use the 2 bicycles that we have available to explore the tow-paths and cycle routes that abound in this area.
The hamlet of Lucy is on the edge of Ribemont which can be accessed via St Quentin at Junction 10 from the A26. It is an easy drive, approximately two hours from Calais, Dunkirk or even Zeebrugge.
Ribemont is a small market town rich in history and culture, with large supermarket and petrol station, several boulangeries and cafe tabacs, a pizza parlour, pharmacy, florists and hairdressers. The Mouton Noir is a restaurant within walking distance where you can get a good meal at a reasonable price.
Ribemont has an excellent kayak club and once a year a tournament is held on the river at the rear of the chateau. You can discover the river L'Oise by kayak with a half or full day river tour from St Quentin.
Just outside the grounds of the chateau runs the small tourist train, taking in the scenery of the LOise valley. From time to time, the dining car, reminiscent of the Orient Express steams along the tracks, offering luxury dining of a bygone age.
The City of St Quentin, 15kms from Lucy, is best known for the Basilique and is a bustling City full of artisan and designer shops, street cafes and beautiful Gothic architecture. A large market is held every Wednesday and Saturday morning off the town square.
The medieval walled town of Laon, approx 40kms away (the capital of France before Paris) oozes history such as the 12th Century Knights Templar Chapelle des Templiers. The Cathedrale de Notre-Dame (build in the second half of the 12th Century) was so ahead of its time that parts of its design were copied at Chartres, Reims and Notre-Dame in Paris.
Reims, approx 60km away, is synonymous with champagne. A 2000 year old city, it witnessed the holy annointing the Kings of France, its architectural monuments (including the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the Palais du Tau, the Abbey of Saint-Remi) have been listed by UNESCO of part of the World Heritage.
Other things to do
The theme parks of Disneyland and Parc Asterix are just two of several theme parks all driveable within an hour or so.
A lot of the local towns have museums covering a range of topics, from art at La Fere, local history at Ribemont and the Museum de la Resistance about 15kms away. The chateau makes an ideal base for exploring ancient battlefieleds and monuments in the area.
Your holiday can be as relaxing or as energetic as you like it, easy to get to, but far enough down into France to be truly French!
