Cottage overview - owner's description

Mango Lodge is a timber house with open-plan living and surrounded by nature. Inside the high ceilings, numerous doors and windows and open style gives the house a light and airy feel. Outside the huge roofed deck gives you space to relax or dine with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. The half-acre garden surrounds you with nature and gives you a feeling of being hidden away from the world. It also provides numerous fruits and flowers from mangoes to limes, heliconia to hibiscus.

But this is no isolated jungle cabin. A two minute walk through the garden brings you out in the centre of the Toucari bay-front where to your left you have the village with its bars, restaurants and kayak/paddle-board hire. A minute or two walking through the village and you are at the beach where you can relax or go snorkelling out to Toucaru reef - one of the best sites on the island.

Mango Lodge sleeps up to 7 guests in 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, ceiling fan and doors that open out onto the deck with views of the ocean (yes you can sit up in bed and gaze out to the Caribbean Sea). There is also an en-suite with wc and shower. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed, a private balcony facing the ocean, ceiling fan and views of the garden. The third bedroom has twin beds, a ceiling fan and views over the garden. There is also a stylish day-bed in the living area which allows for a seventh guest. All beds have quality mattresses, superior bedding and mosquito nets.

The spacious bathroom has an electric shower with instant hot water. The kitchen is large, simple and fully equipped with stove, fridge-freezer, coffee machine, toaster, dishwasher and all the glassware, crockery and cookware you could need.

Many of the tourist sites promoted in Dominica are in the south (where the cruise ships dock). But here in the north-west we have lots of adventures which, though less advertised, are also less busy and just as spectacular. Fill your vacation with Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley, the Indian River, Syndicate Trail, Milton Falls, Lapluy Falls, Lamothe River Falls, Cold Soufriere, Toucari Beach, Toucari reef snorkelling, Purple Turtle Beach, Rainforest horse-back riding, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sailing, and more.

The house and the view are amazing. It is not only very nice, but everything is functional inside the house, so it's a real pleasure to spend time there. The only regret we had was when we had to leave. We would love to come back and stay longer this time. Congratulations to the owners !

Mango Cottage must be one of the loveliest houses on Dominica! Light, open and airy, it is beautifully situated on a hill overlooking the sea. You are surrounded by birds and foliage, with the beach at the bottom of the garden, and nothing but nature in every direction. Yet you have friendly neighbours/caretakers to help you and make you feel at home.

Caso took us on a great boat trip: to the wreck, the bat caves, the snorkelling reef and the champagne bubbles beneath the sea. One of the most amazing sights of the trip though, occurred when I was just swimming in Toucari. I heard splashing on the horizon ... and saw an unmistakeable sperm whale thrashing its tail!!

We also recommend the Syndicate Parrot Walk (even if it looks closed, it isn’t), the Trafalgar Waterfalls, and the cold Soufriere volcano just up the road from the house. Even Roseau is fun in a crazy way. However our favourite was the trip up the Indian River ... so pretty and tranquil, with a funky bar at the end! Finally, everywhere there is greenery and the most enormous jungle leaves you’ve ever seen ... with the serene colourful Mango Cottage to come home to. Do go!

Andrew and his wife were such fabulous hosts for our special group and the property was picture-perfect. Everything was brand new and very clean. Highly recommend for couple, family or friends. Everyone should check it out!

Thank you Tara for your lovely comments. Your group were especially entertaining and thank you for that fabulous lunch on your last day. The breeze is still blowing here :-)

There are many things we liked about the rental, our favourite being the huge deck, with two large, very comfortable sofas. We set up our laptop on the table there, and the internet connection was fast and never failed. Being covered, the porch is ideal even when it's pouring, but it's open enough that you don't feel closed in, and you have a great view of the surroundings... We like to hike and go to the beach, so we were gone most of the day, every day, and the terrace was a welcome spot to have dinner in the evening (very few, if any, mosquitoes).
The house itself is pleasant and well-appointed. The bed is very comfortable and the sheets of excellent quality. You don't need air conditioning as there are lots of windows with a lovely breeze coming through. The water pressure in the shower is good. We missed having a TV, but appreciated having a washing machine and dish washer. There is a long clothesline just outside the door, and clothes dry surprisingly quickly.
You can find good local fruits and vegetables from street vendors, and grilled chicken on Fridays, but the grocery stores are poorly stocked. Don't bother trying to find a decent bottle of wine anywhere.
The location was ok, but not great for our needs. There are a few areas you can walk to, you can even walk the 7 km. to Portsmouth (although there's a killer hill on the way) or you can catch a local bus in Toucari to take you to Portsmouth if you want to transfer to another bus and go on further. The bus routes are limited though, and the buses are few and far between, which makes getting around difficult and time-consuming. There are no nice beaches in the Toucari area, so if you like spending time at the beach, I would suggest renting in the Calibishie area on the north-east side of the island. Taxis here are very expensive, and even if you agree on a price beforehand, you might be in for a surprise. Know also that there's a departure tax when leaving the island, payable in cash only.

Thank you Lisa for your lovely positive review. I can see that you gave us only 3 stars based on our location and the fact that you chose not to take our recommendation to rent a car. I am not sure why you didn't like Toucari Beach, it is popular and people travel to come and enjoy it. Our beach is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, boat trips and fishing, all things you cannot do on the Calibishie beaches because they face the Atlantic Ocean.

Hello Andrew,
We were very pleased with the Mango Lodge and hope to come aging sometime soon. The cottage was very comfortable, the view, the breeze, your service and team of additional people for excursions and the Toucari area were lovely, the only thing I would change would be a longer stay!
One small suggestion, invest in better pots and pans!!

Thank you Brenda for your lovely review. And OK, yes you're right, time to buy new pots and pans. I'll get that done this weekend!

This place is amazing! A true vacation retreat! We loved the place and the people's working around. The beach, the little restaurant at the beach, the view on the terrace. Toucari Bay is a hidden gem in Dominica and you can go around Roseau very easily in a one hour ride. We're gonna come back!

Andrew thank you very much for great Mango Lodge! We had a great time there! House is beautiful and very comfortable. Beautiful relaxing view! We had lot of amazing experiences: parrots at Syndicate, snorcheling at Toucari, Milton and Neff falls, Number One Beach, Red Rocks, Bubble Bath Beach at Soufriere and much more. Kids likes it all very much! And what a beautiful friendly smiling and helpful people there! This was our first time at Dominica but surely not the last! Thank you very much! Best regards Elena & 4 boys :-) PS: We "met" 4 mosquitos for all time - absolutely no problem with that.
