Village house overview - owner's description

The Old Olive Mill is an ancient traditional stone Cypriot village house that sits in a secluded spot in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, With 360º of stunning views over the valley & moutains

The Old Olive Mill is an ancient traditional stone Cypriot village house combining the dowry house of the late priest's wife and the village's olive mill - hence the name.
The house has been lovingly restored over the past few years and sits in a secluded spot in the quiet farming village of Dhoros. Dhoros is situated in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, half way between the summit and the coastal town of Limassol. With 360º of stunning views over the ever changing mountains the house is the ideal location for holidaying throughout the year.
Almond and olive trees abound, whilst bougainvillea adds glorious colour at all times of year. Fields of yellow Easter daisies in the early spring are spectacular, whilst oleanders, geraniums, snapdragons and succulents grow wherever they can take hold.
In the winter the house sits just below the snow-line whilst allowing excellent access to the winter slopes above.
Dhoros is a traditional mountain Cypriot village, with many old stone houses and winding cobbled alleyways. Rural and peaceful, village life continues as it has done for centuries, Little English is spoken or heard in the village as the majority of the villagers are Cypriot. However, this doesn't mean that the villagers are uncommunicative. As with all traditional Cypriot villages and their inhabitants, welcome or καλωσορισατε (kalos Orisaste) are the keywords that our villagers use to greet newcomers. A friendly smile and an invite to partake of a cup of Cypriot coffee and some traditional glyko are commonplace with many of the villagers who love the chance to try and chat to visitors.

If you want peace and tranquillity, and be close to the beach, the mountains and the town of Limassol, this is definitely the place. The Old Olive Mill house is located in the small village of Dhoros. The location is breath taking with views over the Kouris valley and the Troodos Mountains. It brings you back to a time when life was lived at a much slower pace. The villagers are very friendly and we were even invited to the house keeper’s house to watch her make Soujouko a traditional Cypriot sweet and to taste her husband’s Zivinia a traditional alcoholic beverage which proved an excellent way of spending a lazy afternoon in the village. The House itself is a well modernized old building, clean, sunny, pleasant, and includes all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. All in all a wonderful place to spend a stress free holiday and we hope to return as soon as possible. Mr & Mrs G. Brown (Watford)

Well-appointed traditional property in accessible mountain village. Great for couples I really enjoyed my relaxing stay at the Old Olive Mill, Dhoros, Cyprus and look forward to my return in the near future. I discovered it when looking for something slightly different than the traditional sunny beach apartment hotel. The location was absolutely stunning; set in a rustic village in the foothills of the Troodos mountains with easy access via rented car from the main city of Limassol and the airports of Larnaca or Paphos. A car rental is definitely a must and this gives you easy access from this base up into the mountains to access cycle rides, good walks, waterfalls, monasteries and the traditional villages or down to the golden sandy beaches or some of the Cypriot archaeological sites. The village does have a local shop with some interesting opening times, but there are some suitable supermarkets a short drive away. Dhoros is a charming traditional village which provides a great location to unwind and relax after a day exploring further afield. The jewel of this property is the large balcony with near 360 degree views up and down the valley. A perfect place to sit and enjoy a cold Cypriot beer day or night soaking in the sun and the noise of geckos, cicadas and the odd donkey (though make sure you take some insect repellent for the evenings). As you are up in the foothills of the mountains with only small villages in the valley the low levels of light pollution means dark skies and huge numbers of stars visible to sit under. We found the apartment well stocked with utensils, linen and other accoutrements required for a comfortable stay. However, if you don’t want to cook we found a great selection of tavernas and restaurants in surrounding villages where we enjoyed some traditional Greek Cypriot cuisine whilst being entertained by the local village cats. We would also recommend a visit to the nearby village of Lania. There is a large artist community with open studios, galleries and some good souvenir shops, though the village is on the main tourist trail up the mountain so can get busy with coaches so best to head over early morning or late afternoon. All in all a lovely stay in a peaceful idyll. Would definitely recommend it for those looking to escape the rat run and relax or for those who enjoy a bit of hustle and bustle but then like to escape to peace and quiet. Beautiful house with stunning views We stayed at The Old Olive Mill for our two week summer holiday. It was a beautiful house with everything we needed for our stay. The location is stunning and we spent many a happy evening relaxing on the balcony enjoying the mountain views and, when it got dark, enjoying the abundant stars. The house is set in a lovely, traditional Cypriot village and we quickly got in the habit of taking a stroll when the sun set and the temperature dropped slightly. Everyone we met was lovely and very welcoming. we found the house and village to be a fantastic base to explore the island from. We hired a car and set off on daily adventures either down to the sea, into and over the mountains or into Limassol where we found some fantastic restaurants and cafes in the old port and a lovely seaside promenade. It was always nice to head back to the house though where the cooler nights made for a more comfortable nights sleeps and the relaxing pace of the village meant you couldn't help but feel relaxed. All in all a lovely stay in a gorgeous old stone house, would definitely recommend. Mr & Mrs Gardner (Warwickshire)
