Castle overview - owner's description
Palazzo Portole was rebuilt from a ruin more than a decade ago. It is an integral part of the historically-important town of Opratlj (Portole), with its north side forming a section of the old town walls. The property was restored and decorated in a style in keeping with the traditions of the region and offers year-round comfort with stunning gardens and pool as well as shaded areas in summer and open wood fires with central heating in winter. The exposed beams and stone floors of the living room and kitchen-dining room are echoed in the first floor where the bedrooms have wooden floors with Indian and Turkish rugs throughout. The downstairs Tower twin bedroom with its platform sleeping area, sofa bed and separate entrance is a unique feature. On the next floor of the Tower is a well-stocked Library with a spiral staircase to another twin bedroom. This has a second spiral staircase leading to the Tower roof terrace. From here there are stunning views over the surrounding forests north to the Alps, east to the Ucka mountain range and across the roofs of the town. The main floor of the Palazzo has a kitchen/dining room and a big bright living room with plenty of space for large groups of people. There are three more bedrooms above, the master double with four-poster bed which has an en-suite bathroom with shower, a twin room with en-suite shower and another bedroom with a large double bed which can also be configured as a twin room. This also has an en-suite bathroom. The pool is in a secluded part of the landscaped garden surrounded by climbing roses and jasmine behind a high bay hedge offering complete privacy. The Palazzo has played host to many groups over the last decade and it is a perfect venue for a family get-together and ideal for two or three families with children. It is also a great place for groups of couples who enjoy holidaying together. The traffic-free cobbled streets of Oprtalj with its tiny alleys and deep arches show evidence of the many rulers who have held sway in the area, from the Romans through Venetians to the Austro-Hungarians and Italians. The Loggia, an open-sided market building erected on top of the town ramparts by the Venetians in the 18th century, contains a plaque of the Lion of St Mark indicating the importance of Oprtalj in the period. The area is famed not only for the beauty of the scenery and the chain of hilltop towns but also for the gastronomic excellence of its produce. A white truffle was found in Livade in the valley below Oprtalj which holds a Guinness world record. These elusive tubers along with wild mushrooms and game of all sorts are abundant throughout the autumn and winter. The Palazzo offers packages and long weekend special offers during the truffle season. You can eat truffle-filled meals at the castle or in local restaurants and join truffle hunters foraging for the elusive tuber. The local red and white wine varieties - Teran and Malvazija - are celebrated well beyond the borders of the province. Istrian ham, a type of prosciutto, is cured on nearby farms and is typical of the cuisine - a fusion of Italian dishes and local produce. From Oprtalj you can walk through the forest on ancient pathways, cycle down the Parenzana, the route of the old Austro-Hungarian railway line, go sea fishing in the Adriatic, 30 minutes away, dive in the crystal waters onto ancient archaeological sites, para-glide from the hills around Motovun, a neighbouring hill town, along the Mirna river valley, go horse riding or play golf on one of the local courses. There is a spa complex in the valley below Oprtalj with a natural thermal pool set in spectacular alpine landscape where a variety of therapies including sauna, massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, thermotherapy (use of therapeutic mud) are offered . Sightseers can visit the Roman forum and amphitheatre in Pula, the mosaics in Porec, the Venetian-influenced port of Rovinj, the pirate town of Piran and the many other historic sites in the region. The Palazzo is within easy reach of several airports - one hour to Pula in the south of Istria, an hour and a half to Trieste in Italy, just over two hours to Ljubljana in Slovenia and two and a half hours to Venice. Using the hydrofoil service from Umag (about 30 minutes away) you can take a day trip to Venice. When staying in Oprtalj you will need a car. Parking is available outside the Palazzo.
