3 bedroom holiday cottage,
2 ensuite shower rooms, sleeps six with beautiful swimming pool and mountain views.
Lavender Cottage is nestled in the Stara Planina mountains in the beautiful Elena district of Bulgaria. The scenery is stunning with wonderful gorges leading to cascading waterfalls. Watch as the villagers go about thier business as we have a vibrant farming community with traditions almost as old as the mountains themselves. Elena town is only 15 minutes away and is a very cosmopolitan and lively town with many bars and restraunts. Here you can shop, eat ,socialise and basque in the atmosphere of bulgarian life. Families are seen every evening in the square playing with the children .
A car is a necessity to fully appreciate and enjoy the local beauty spots. We can recommend an excellent car hire company on request.
Accomodation and facilities
The house itself is within the grounds of our home adjoining another smaller holiday cottage and sleeps a maximum of 6. Larger groups of up to 10 can be accomodated utilising our adjoining cottage .We will ensure a warm welcome and endeavour to help you enjoy your stay. We have an outside barbecue area and a small play area for children.
This year we have installed a fabulous swimming pool as the heat can be intense. Great at the end of a days touring or walking. Or perhaps you may want to spend the day relaxing by the pool and taking in the view of the mountains beyond.
Although we are predominantly self catering, packed lunches can be provided on request with typical traditional bulgarian cuisine .
Towels and bedding are provided for your use and changed on a weekly basis.
..Village and Surrounding area
The village itself is quite sleepy during the day as most people are away at work. In the evening it gradually livens up as the villagers await the homecoming of thier livestock. Its a sight to behold as first the cows meander down from the mountain after a days grazing, closely followed by herds of sheep and then a stampede of magnificent goats. You will be amazed as the animals turn off into thier own streets ,each knowing the way home!!!
The village itself has two well stocked general stores , a bar and a post office. There are daily buses into nearby Elena. English is not spoken in the village but a big smile, a Dobur Den [good day] and a few hand signals will get you most of your provisions.
In Elena there are self service supermarkets.
3km from Elena are beautiful lakes for fishing, camping and picnics. The bird life in the area is second to none with 80% of european birds breeding here. Birds of prey are in abundance as are storks with huge nests in the most unlikely places on telegraph poles.
This area is suited to artists, fishing, horse riding, cycling and hiking. City life with all entertainment facilities is on 45min away in the old medieval city of Veliko Turnovo.
These properties, Lavender cottage and the adjoining cottage, are set in beautiful countryside with Elena a 10 min drive and providing enough restaurants and supermarkets for your needs. The properties were lovely and clean, although the kitchen area in Lavender cottage is small, eating out in Bulgaria is cheap enough not to need to slave over a hot stove! We found enough to interest us in the surrounding area (waterfalls, chairlifts, "crafty" towns and villages ) even if tourism is not big in this region, probably a good thing. The kids loved the pool and we all enjoyed the "air of tranquillity" the place had, there is nothing like lounging in a hammock in the shade of the trees. Paul was very helpful and happy to offer suggestions of where to go and where to eat - which restaurants had an "English" menu, he let us have a go at archery and was very understanding when we lost a couple of arrows!
If you are looking for hustle and bustle, night clubs and dancing then dont go to Lavender Cottage, but if you enjoy getting away from it all, nature and peace and quiet then I would recommend you pay a visit to Paul, Tibbs, Billy and Tinktonk..

I am writing this review with great memories, lovely experience at the cottage and village, meeting with a lovely couple – Carol and Paul who were so kind and generous
We stayed their for 4 days with our 3 children, we enjoyed every moment, the place is clean, we and the kids enjoyed the pool, the swings, the garden.
It is an excellent base to visit Elena, Veliko Tornovo and near by attractions.
The village is quiet, lovely view. The only "noise" :-) is from the goats, sheep, cows and chickens.
Great place to relax and enjoy, we very much recommend

We have just returned from 2 weeks in Lavender cottage and would without any reservation recommend a stay here.
Paul and Carol are superb hosts and a joy to be around. They are a wealth of knowledge of the region, can not do enough to help you and are so warm and welcoming that it is like visiting a particularly favourite Aunt and Uncle.
We had all sorts of plans to visit sights around the area all of which vanished as we were hypnotised by the beauty and tranquillity of the house and its gardens. There is complete peace with the only sounds being the rich and varied bird song and the occasional rooster or goat sounding in the distance from the village below. There are hundreds of butterflies and birds to watch, including a Golden Eagle, and a beautiful pool to cool down in. After two weeks of that we all came back more relaxed that we have been in many years.
For the days when you can tear yourself from a hard days relaxing there is the lovely little town of Elena nearby and about 50 minutes away Veliko Tarnovo with its beautiful cobbled medieval looking streets.
If you want crowds and busy nightlife stay away, if you want relaxing tranquillity stay here.

We had a fantastic time. The property and gardens were lovely. The kids particularly enjoyed the pool and swings. It was an excellent base for visiting Elena and Veliko Tarnivo. The nearby mountains and lakes are beautiful. Our hosts were very knowledgeable of the area, approachable, kind and helpful. We look forward to staying here again.

If you want a truley rural Bulgarian experience then this is the place. It is almost as if the 21st century has passed by. The cottage was very comfortable and the swimming pool fantastic. The village is small and quiet with a couple of shops selling the basics: bread, tomatoes, cheese. olives....what more do you need! There is hardly any traffic - but plenty of goats, sheep, cows and chickens. The towns of Elena and Veliko Turnovo are nearby and worth a visit.
Carole and Paul are excellent hosts and being English can give lots of inside information about life in Bulgaria.

We had an excellent holiday staying at Lavender cottage. It is very peaceful and relaxing. The pool was a definite plus as it was very hot when we stayed. The garden and pool are very private and safe for children. Paul the owner was very friendly and helpful and had a good knowledge of the area. Elena is a lovely town with nice restaurants and bars. The lady at the tourist information was very helpful and you can do a really nice tour of the town, taking in lovely buildings, churches and museums. The waterfall and the lake near by are great days out especially for the children and it was fun trying to find them ( you need a good map). Veilko Tarnovo is well worth a visit and the caves and Monastery at Dryanovo were excellent too. Great place, great time!!

If there is a recipe for calming down and relieving stress, Bebrovo and this place must be it.

Thanks so much for a lovely break from Sofia-our first venture into this area and it won't be our last. Saw a bird we'd never seen before on everyday of the holiday- still looking out for that promised bee eater, though!
Shows how amazing the place is when bouts of chicken pox and tonsilitis had no effect on holiday! Next time when the baby is a bit older, we'll give the archery and horse riding a go.
Good luck with everything, see you again!

The location is fantastic and has beautiful views over the village. Locals are very friendly. They will do their best to understand you and very patient and the children will always be in for a game.
