Villas In Portugal

Lisbon is one of Portugal’s gems and it’s easy to see why so many people have fallen in love with it, shirking other destinations in order to return year after year. It’s a city of culture, architecture, wonderful food and glorious attractions as well as a vibrant nightlife and a gentle sea to lounge beside. No matter what you want, Lisbon seems to cater to, and it’s this colourful clash of attractions, scenery and friendly people that make it so special and sets it apart.

We always like to get a local’s perspective when researching our articles and for this piece we spoke to Pedro of Spica Sailing to ask him what made Lisbon and Portugal at large such a well-loved destination. He had this to say:

"Portugal's most precious touristic attraction is the Portuguese people. We love to welcome everyone to our country and make them feel they are at home" -Pedro, Spica Sailing in Lisbon

And it’s true. Of all the things we hear most about Portugal and especially Lisbon, it’s the overwhelming friendliness of the locals that really sticks out in people's minds.

So what are you waiting for? Why not head to Lisbon and see what all the fuss is about. To get you started, we've listed five things that you must do on a trip to Lisbon.

Visit At Least One Museum

Museums in Lisbon

There are many excellent museums in Lisbon that are worth your time and if you’re lucky enough to have a long holiday stretched out before you then you should try and visit as many as possible. For the rest of you who need to narrow down your options however, there are a few which stick out as being unmissable.

The first that we highly recommend would be the Marine Museum (Museu de Marinha). This world-famous museum is a testament to Portugal being a maritime pioneer, showcasing some amazing models and providing travellers with the rich nautical history of Portugal starting from the 15th century onwards. Go, you won’t be disappointed.

The next one we strongly recommend would be the Museu Colecao Berardo in Belém, which is the main modern and contemporary art museum in Lisbon. It’s a must-see especially if you’re a big fan of 20th century modern art, with a vast amount of permanent exhibitions including works from movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Kinetic and Nouveau Réalisme.

These are but two of the best museums, there are many more. Others include the excellent Museu Nacional do Azulejo, showcasing traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles and their history, the Mae de Agua Lisbon Aqueduct and Water Museum, and the quirky Hospital de Bonecas that not only showcases dolls but actively repairs them!

Trust us, a holiday to Lisbon is not complete without a trip to at least one museum.
