Owner Interview: Angela Tells Us about her Villa in Spain
Angela and Greg Jones are the proud owners of Property 106307, a light, spacious and modern apartment in Caleta de Velez, Spain. It's prime location, just walking distance from the beach, supermarket and bar, means it's a much-coveted property among our renters! Over to Ange...
1. Tell us a bit about your property and its location...
Our home-from-home lies on the secure, well maintained and sought after urbanisation of Baviera Golf, Caleta de Velez in Axarquia; East Malaga. The first floor 2 x bed apartment has a prime position overlooking the large, child friendly communal pool. It is tasteful, modern and uncluttered in décor, boasting both a family size ensuite and smaller bathroom, as well as an air conditioned open plan living / dining area. We are just a ten minute walk from both the beach and club house and have lovely views of the mountains from our balcony. The nearest supermarket, bar and restaurant are only a ten minute stroll away and for shopaholics, El Ingenio retail park is about 10 minutes by car.
2. Why do you love the area?
What attracted us to this area, as opposed to those more densely populated by ex-pats, was the traditional Spanish feel. Although many nationalities come to holiday on our complex and in the surrounding area, it is also seen as a desirable residential location for many Spanish.
We love that each Saturday we wander down to the local market where traders sell everything, from kaleidoscopic ceramics to giant avocados. Fresh fruit and local produce is abundant; and traders pride themselves in the low cost and quality of their goods.
Caleta de Velez is a town which hasn't lost sight of its traditions or heritage and this also attracted us to it as our second home. It has a lively, thriving fish market as well as harbour, and sun worshippers will still see the trawlers heading out to sea as they sip their cocktails from a sun lounger.
Each summer, the festival of the Virgen del Carmen takes place in July. Many fishing villages celebrate this event, as the Virgen del Carmen is the protector of fishermen. Watching the locals parade through the streets and onto the sand, before pushing the celebratory boat out to sea, really reinforces the culture and tradition of the town.
3. Who would you recommend this property to?
Everyone and anyone! The beach is soft and safe for children and you're spoilt for choice along the paseo -or promenade - as family owned chiringuitos sell an enormous variety of foods, including freshly caught sea food. We love nothing more than strolling along the sand from Caleta into the lively, neighbouring town of Torre del Mar; stopping occasionally for a chilled beer or tinto de verano.
We also think the location can't be beaten as it's about 30 minutes drive from Malaga airport; an hour to Marbella; approximately ten minutes to Nerja and roughly an hour away from Granada, if people wish to venture further afield. Buses pass regularly through the town to Nerja and Torre del Mar if visitors don't wish to hire a car, so you can be as active or lethargic as you please.
4. Talk us through your routine for making sure your property is perfect for your guests when they arrive...
When preparing for guests, we keep in touch regularly prior to their stay to determine their requirements, for example, regarding sleeping arrangements. Families with young children often avail themselves of our travel cot or air bed for little travellers who don't wish to stay in their own room. For those who do, little touches like a night light allow the child some comfort in unfamiliar surroundings at night. We also have bottle sterilisers for our really young guests!
Also, the apartment is thoroughly cleaned and prepped for each new arrival - freshly laundered towels and bedsheets (and spares) are provided and we suggest guests use our beach towels when staying to save them having to add unnecessary weight to their cases.
As well as this, a chilled welcome pack awaits them after their flight and we provide one air conditioning meter card in the cost of rental. Additional cards can be purchased locally via our key holder if required.
Wherever possible, our key holder offers airport transfers at a reduced cost in comparison to local taxi firms. If our guests request this service, we put them in touch prior to their stay so they can arrange meeting points and times in order to minimise any stress or concern. Knowing there will be a friendly face to meet them after their flight ensures guests can relax once they've collected their luggage. Our key holder remains in contact - if required - throughout the stay, if we are not in the area to provide any help or advice ourselves.
Wherever possible, we act on guest feedback to improve the holiday experience. Recently for example, many ex-pats lost UK tv channels due to satellite changes in the area. In response to this, we have had new equipment installed so that guests can experience home comforts in the form of most UK tv channels. Additionally, we have had wifi installed to allow easy Internet access. Finally, DVDs, books and some children's toys including pool floats are made available as we understand that a happy child means a relaxing vacation for all!
5. Finally, give us a recommendation for your favourite local Restaurant!
We have lots of restaurants that we could recommend but one which stands out for value, quality, a family friendly atmosphere and great location is Pippo's on Algarobbo promenade (15 mins walk). We have never had a bad meal here and would strongly advise booking ahead at busy times and weekends. Our favourites are the gambas pil-pil sea bass and steak dishes. They have an extensive wine list too - something for everyone!
