Owner Review: Bongkot tells us about his incredible villas in Thailand
Whilst his real name is Bongkot, our owner tells us that ‘in Thailand we almost always use nicknames – and mine is Ten.’ Ten manages both Green Gecko and Gecko Villa, which are nestled in the heart if the countryside, each offering fully catered accommodation and luxury private pools.
Hi Ten, tell us a little bit about your beautiful properties and their location?
Both of our rural Thai villas have a private swimming pool and are set in amongst our own working rice paddies in North East Thailand, away from all the crowds. In addition, both properties are full board with meals included in the rates, which allows our guests to enjoy freshly cooked Thai meals and to profit from the extra free time that this affords them.
Why do you love the area?
It has kept its authenticity as agriculture and traditional Thai village life remain the norm here, away from the crowded and now internationalized tourist meccas of Thailand. The locals like to greet and welcome visitors, and there are plenty of offbeat things to see and do.
Who would you recommend your properties to?
Families, groups of friends, or couples looking for peace and privacy – as well as to all those interested in Thai cooking and the traditional ways of Thai village life. Photographers will love it! Also, I would recommend them to visitors planning on crossing the border from Thailand to Laos, as the location makes an excellent stop off point.
Talk us through your routine for making sure your properties are perfect for your guests when they arrive.
Each villa sees a team of local villagers move in to clean prior to the arrival of our guests and to add those touches that make a difference, such as fresh flower arrangements. We also contact our guests prior to their arrival to ask if they have any allergies or special dietary requirements, or any preferences in terms of the spiciness of their meals. This ensures that we can cook the kind of meals that they prefer from the outset of their stay with us. In addition, we ask them for details of their arrival so that we can arrange to meet them at the airport (or elsewhere) and then drive them to the villa – another complimentary service we provide. And then, of course, there are all the normal jobs that we undertake prior to any check in – such as checking air-conditioning systems or the pool functioning and so forth, and ensuring that the refrigerator is stocked with a good supply of cold beer (again at no charge) as an antidote to the tropical sun!
Finally, give us a recommendation for your favourite local spot…
If you visit during the cool, dry season from December through March, don’t miss a trip by boat on the famous Red Lotus Lake, which is just five minutes away. You will be amazed by the thick carpet of blooming pink lotus flowers that cover this enormous lake, under blue skies. You’ll see local fishermen at work, a wealth of wild bird life, and enjoy the other-worldly beauty of this lake that CNN named as the world’s second strangest!
