Portugal is recognised worldwide as home to some of Europe's most beautiful golf courses, with the Algarve especially considered synonymous with the sport. With a wide variety of breathtaking courses across the country, it's easy to feel spoilt for choice when choosing your perfect golf destination. 1. Penha Longa in Lisbon
There are two fantastic courses offered at Penha Longa, with the championship standard Atlântico being a true highlight. The 18-hole course winds up and down a hilly terrain, with hole 16 being particularly difficult, requiring a long drive to the green. 2. Monte Rei Golf Club in the Algarve
Balancing the atmosphere and quality of a private club with the open community of a public course, Monte Rein provides a beautiful landscape in the Algarve. Located in the hills northeast of Tavira, its mountain settings offer a unique character and charm. 3. Oitavos Dunes in Lisbon
Rated by Golf magazine as one of the top 100 courses in the world, Oitvavos Dunes is a gorgeous course located on elevated land overlooking the ocean. Arthur Hills, one of the greatest golf architects of our time, crafted each hole to live up to its idyllic setting, which in turn has provided the course with three landscape forms: forested area, dunes land, and a coastal transition area. 4.Vale do Lobo Golf Course in the Algarve
Renowned as the most picturesque golf course in Portugal and arguably, most of Europe. Although it is said that the Ocean courses provide a better playing landscape, and courses overall, no-one can deny the beauty of hole 16 on the Royal course. 5. Santo Antonio Golf Course in the Algarve
Pepe Gancedo, the Spanish architect of the popular Santo Antonio course, believes that as little of the terrain should be altered during the construction of his courses. Therefore, this famous Portuguese course runs over a hilly landscape, with plenty of lakes and bunkers to challenge even experienced golfers. 6. Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Course in Óbidos
A fantastic 18-hole course that delivers a challenging experience throughout, combined with a stunning open landscape. Designer Seve Ballesteros worked hard to ensure there were no weak holes, carefully plotting his course, and cleverly using lakes and ponds at every chance to keep golfers on their toes. 7. Oceanico Courses in the Algarve
This Southern golf resort offers two fantastic courses, both providing a challenge for golfers with a variety of rolling hills, well positioned bunkers, broad water hazards and winding tree lines. The Victoria course, opened in 2004, has a large layout and plays host to the popular Portugal Masters tournament.
